Cabling and Bracing for Mature Trees

Your big maple has a fork that's starting to crack, or a main limb opening up over the deck. That doesn't automatically mean removal. I install cables and brace rods that take the load off weak unions and let a mature tree live out its full life safely. The hardware sits high in the canopy where you won't see it, and it works by sharing the stress across the trunk so the tree can keep growing without that limb tearing away. It's a fraction of the cost of removing a big tree, and you keep the shade, the privacy and the property value that come with it.

I inspect the fork or the opening union first, then I decide whether cabling alone will do the job or if I need to add brace rods as well. Brace rods are threaded bolts that run through the wood itself and lock the two sides of a split together, whereas cables wrap around the limbs higher up and prevent them from spreading further. On a lot in Toronto or across the greater area, where ice storms and windstorms put real stress on old hardwoods, I've seen this approach save trees that would otherwise have failed. When the damage is already too far gone, or when the tree is diseased, tree removal becomes the safer choice, but cabling buys time and keeps the tree standing.

Emerald Ash Borer Treatment and Removal

The emerald ash borer is well established across Toronto and the GTA, and it doesn't forgive. An infested ash that isn't treated is a dead ash walking. I assess your tree honestly, looking for the signs: crown thinning, the distinctive D-shaped exit holes where the beetles have tunnelled out, woodpecker damage where birds have pecked through the bark hunting for larvae. Based on what I find, I tell you straight whether an injection still makes sense or whether we're past that point and the tree is too far gone.

If the ash is treatable, I coordinate the injection with a licensed applicator to give the tree its best chance. If it's not, I remove it before it becomes brittle and dangerous.
